Holiday season is upon us and near enough every small talk conversation I have involves the question ‘are you going anywhere nice this year?’ and of course my answer is ‘YAAAAS, I’m going to Lisbon!’ which is three weeks away today don’t you know (and if you didn’t know it, then you certainly will in the weeks to come as my Insta captions get progressively more excitable the closer it gets!). So naturally a very blogger cliche post is to follow… how to ‘pack light’ (as if you didn’t already know).
I’m a relatively frequent flyer, we tend to go on two or three city breaks a year and every time we opt for hang luggage only because it’s such a faff to wait at that bloody luggage carousel for your bag – which lets be honest is always the last one off the plane – especially when you’re only in your holiday destination for a few days. That being said, I’ve obviously done my fair share of cramming a frankly stupid amount of clothes in to my Ryanair sized hand luggage case so maybe, just maybe, I’ll be able to impart some of my packing light wisdom to you!
Aside from the obvious which is to not be a wolly and refrain from packing 22 dresses for four days in the sun, I have three top tips which I always ALWAYS stick to.
- PLAN YOUR OUTFITS – I know what you’re thinking, duh?! But I mean properly plan them, and not only that but consider things that you’ll be doing whilst away. How many times are you planning on going to the beach? How many times will you be going out-out? Are you taking any day trips? If you do this well and stick to it then it’s the most effective (and the most enjoyable – I’m a self-confessed queen of organisation!) of them all. It prevents over-packing (granted you are allowed some ‘what if?’ pieces thrown in for good measure) whilst ensuring you have everything you need, and what’s more you won’t have any pesky ‘packing regret’.
- GOODBYE LIQUIDS – Liquid allowances are the bane of my life! That panic you have when you’re approaching security and frantically searching through your luggage for your sandwich bag stuffed with liquids, there’s no other pressure like it. I guess you can’t get away from that BUT to save on space (and save the awkwardness of the security man giving me the eye because we both know that I have a hell of a lot more than 10 x 100ml in my close to splitting bag) I religiously buy sun cream, shampoo and conditioner when I get to my destination. I mean, you’re going to need more than 100ml of these things anyway!
- DITCH THE TOWEL – Towel or more clothes? Towel or more clothes? Easy choice really, lets just hope the holiday destination is a hot one so you can drip dry! No, I joke, but seriously they’ll have one at the hotel (and no I’m not advocating taking the hotel towel to the beach but…) and if they don’t, buy one!
I’ve also tried the whole ‘rolling your clothes up’ to create more space but I have never really understood that, if anything I found it takes up more space! If you have any other top tips then help a gal out, if it means I can take an extra pair of shoes then I want to hear it and if all else fails shove some stuff in your boyf’s case when he’s not looking and appear confused when he asks why his suitcase now won’t close…
This outfit has nothing to do with packing light apart from being somewhat summery and the skirt in particular will be coming with me to sunny Lisbon very soon (and I know that because I’ve already planned most of my outfits)! Happy travels!
