European city breaks are my absolute favourite thing to do, maybe more so than the week-long summer holiday kind, so flying in to Munich for a weekend of sightseeing fun was right up my street! This was actually my first visit to Germany (although even as I write this I’m still questioning if that is definitely the case, there may have been a school trip to Germany but I certainly can’t remember much of it so…?!) and I was very impressed; good weather, good food and good people!
We actually went with a purpose, and that was to catch up with our university housemate Marius who lives in Landshut which is about a 45 minute train ride from Munich. Four years on and he can still drink us under the table, it must be all those years of drinking nothing but stein’s!
We flew in to Munich on Friday morning and spent the day there before Marius finished work that evening. Munich was nice, I liked it a lot, but we definitely did not make the most of our time there. It was bitterly cold so we sought shelter on a bus tour of the city which was the biggest waste of €17 you can get since nearly all of us took a little nap on the top deck to make up for our 4am alarm that morning, doh! We did however rescue the day by navigating to the BMW museum and swanning around all the fancy cars and giggling at everyone taking selfies in front of them.
Taking public transport in another country is always an experience.
The old wooden underground carriages in Munich looked particularly ropey and the train to Landshut was so packed I was crammed in to the first-class luggage area, but rather that than have a total transport disaster and end up completely lost hey? Luckily for us, Marius had already instructed us on what ticket we should buy and what stop we should take so we made it without any major hiccups.
Saturday was my favourite day. Probably because it started with the breakfast of dreams involving freshly baked pretzels, cheeses, hams, jams, eggs etc etc etc… but also because we explored beautiful Passau where Marius and his girlfriend Barbara went to University which was so much fun; they knew all of the best spots in town which meant we got the most out of the day starting with the amazing view from Passau castle. Then on to explore the university which was given the title ‘most beautiful campus’ and I can see why, it was literally something out of Gilmore Girls and made Lincoln look like a swamp.
I said ‘good food’ at the beginning of this post, and the food was good (we need to take a moment to appreciate the pretzels because OH MYYYY!) but most of it did revolve around meat and sausages and that is not for me – however I discovered cheese spaetzle which is essentially mac and cheese so if you’re not much of a meat eater then stick with the spaetzle, you won’t be disappointed (and you also won’t go hungry because their portion sizes are like nothing you’ve seen before)!
Sunday saw the return of the kind of hangover I haven’t seen since I last saw Marius four years ago, and also the return of the kind of lie-in I haven’t seen since university – the still in bed at 1pm kind. You would think we’d be annoyed for wasting a morning but the fun we had on Saturday night was worth it a million times over! Anyway I donned by shades to hide my hungover face from the world and we went on the nicest walk up to Landshut castle which sorted us all out. Landshut reminds me a lot of Italy with all its coloured houses and cobbled streets, or it may have just been the pizza and ice cream I ate whilst there…
I feel like Munich is quite a popular place to visit but both Passau and Landshut (the amount of times I have typed Landshit instead of Landshut whilst writing this is insane, so apologies in advance if you spot any) were SO much prettier; I would definitely recommend paying them a visit if you can, even if it’s just a for day trip! I failed at taking pictures this whole trip because I was too busy having fun which is the way holidays should be (albeit I’m a little annoyed because England is looking even greyer since I’ve been back which does not make for nice photos!).
Let me know if you’re off on any trips this year, or if you have any recommendations of where I should go next. We did Copenhagen last year, and I’m off to Lisbon with some gal pals in July, but I’m keeping my eyes peels for our next destination! I hope you’re all having a lovely week, I’ll be back with some fashion goodness very soon xx
