You know the scene, you go on holiday with your gal pals, everyone’s looking sun-kissed and glowing except that one friend that looks like they’re positively afraid of the sun. White as anything (made to look even paler whilst standing next to said bronzed goddesses), with a rogue tint at best. That’s me! That ‘healthy glow’ that everyone harps on about, never had it!
I lived in Thailand for 6 months god dammit and I got nothing but a few extra freckles!
This used to really bother me. Many of my first girls holidays involved the familiar routine of shower, FAKE TAN, get ready, night out – an unnecessary extra step when you’re already so rushed for time as is (four 18 yr old females sharing a bathroom, say no more). I’m not ashamed to say I’ve also had the odd spray tan or two before going away, purely to save people from having to don their sunglasses whilst looking at my luminous bikini-clad bod.
It’s almost like the purpose of going on holiday was to come back looking tanned, not to have a bloody good time. You know the whole ‘if it wasn’t documented on social media then it didn’t happen’, well this is if you went away and didn’t get a tan then well, you might as well have stayed at home.
Although I’m not as bothered about being the pale friend as I used to be, I am partial to a fake tan pity party – and when I say ‘partial to’ I mean every week – but just enough to make me a touch darker than my natural shade of ‘see-through’. Anyway I got thinking about this recently and out popped the idea for this post, one half ‘be comfortable in your own skin’ vibes, the other half fake tan reccs. Ironic huh?
Isn’t it funny how the things that really bother us about ourselves when we’re younger turn in to the most minuscule inconveniences when we grow older. HA writing that down just made me think of the time I really wanted long hair back in late high school/sixth form, so much so that I’d wear clip in hair extensions EVERY DAY but they were so thin compared to my natural hair it looked like a straggly mess which matted at the back half way through the day without fail. Likewise there’s certainly been times where I’ve gone OTT with the tanning mousse in an attempt to get that ‘just back from two weeks in Greece’ hue.
Believe it not I had actually tanned the night before taking these pictures which was great planning on my behalf since it was the first day this year that I’ve cracked the legs out and dug my mules out from their hiding place. The skirt, tee and bag are all recent purchases from last weeks panic spring/summer shopping spree and I’m super duper happy with them all!
What with pretty much everyone being more acutely aware of the effects of sun damage, if anything it’s actually a relief that I don’t have to waste my holidays being a slave to the sun because I’m not going to look any better for it anyway! Also, is it just me or is sunbathing beyond boring??? Relaxing for 15 minutes YES, but any longer and I need to be up doing something, playing games, wandering the streets, exploring – anything but wasting my time lying on a sunlounger.
This year I’m going to embrace being the pale friend (but not enough to stop wearing fake tan, god no!).
