I think I’ve spoken about this before, but I don’t like tights. I think they ruin an outfit. If I have to wear them – I say ‘have’ as if I’m forced to, read ~ if it’s really not appropriate to go without ~ – then I tend to go for the lowest denier I possible, normally a 10 or 15. I think a skirt and thick black tights looks a bit ‘blocky’ and I’d rather just wear jeans, but that’s just me. So wearing mini skirts (which is definitely my preferred length) in winter can be a bit of a challenge, especially as I’m one of those ‘always cold’ people so legs out is a solid no thank you!
Mini skirts make up a good quarter of my wardrobe so frankly I can’t afford to pack them away for the winter in favour of their longer hem counterparts, I would quite literally have nothing to wear.
So in case you hadn’t noticed, this is where over the knee boots come in! OTK, high leg, thigh highs – whatever you want to call them – are a godsend for this time of year. They add a whole other element to an outfit, a point of interest, and open up so many more outfit possibilities. I went for a very predictable black pair but since I am an all black everything kind of girl I’ve been eyeing up some more colourful OTK’s to complement my outfits and these Zara babies are my current faves. While we’re on the subject, what are your thoughts on OTK’s over jeans? I’m really unsure whether I love it or hate it and need help to decide. I feel like the beauty of OTK’s is that very flattering bit of leg between the end of the skirt and start of the boot which is kind of ruined by jeans, but I could be swayed.
They’re warmer than tights, they look better, they don’t mysteriously go missing in the wash or pluck when your cat decides that your leg would make a good scratching post.
This H&M jumper is the perfect casual throw on. First up it was £5 in the sale, it would have been a crime not to add it to my rapidly growing jumper collection, you can’t even buy lunch for that! Now I know sometimes the last things left in sales are there for a reason – i.e. because no one in their right mind would wear them – and I know that this could be considered one of those items with it’s sickly sweet slogan which may better belong in the kids section ORRRR it could be considered a very on-trend ironically girly slogan jumper which is exactly how I see it. Whose with me?
As cliché as it is, this outfit really does work for any occasion day or night. I wore this out recently for drinks which turned in to a bit of a night out and didn’t feel under-dressed, likewise I’ve worn this for a mooch around town accompanied by duster coat and hat and wasn’t freezing my t*ts off!
So there you have it; don’t ditch your mini’s in A/W in favour of trousers, stick with team skirt instead! What’s your preferred way to style up skirts for the colder weather? I have so many I need to mix it up a bit and I feel like OTK’s have a bit of a reputation for being somewhat saucy which results in me steering away from them for some occasions, despite them being the best option style wise… What do we think? Just me?
