Do you ever get the feeling that you’re a bit late to the fashion party? Buy the latest ‘IT’ top when it goes in to the sale? Discover a trend everyone is raving about months after it’s ‘in’? ME, ME, ME, literally ‘it me’ emoji, I do this so often but most recently with the glorious long-line midi and maxi dresses.
Now I know these are nothing new, I remember my mum rocking a maxi on many of our family holidays when I was younger, but they’re new to me because once again I’m late to the fashion party. It wasn’t until I saw endless pictures of my favourite fashion bloggers posting shots of themselves swanning about in hot countries, swishing their floaty, pleated, maxi numbers about that I simultaneously realised I needed one in my wardrobe and wondered why I hadn’t already invested in one before. That and the fact that most of my spare time is spent online shopping (well, browsing mostly, I promise!) and all of the shops are killing me with their S/S18 ‘New Arrivals’, particularly these Warehouse maxi dresses which are just to die for and I need me one of those before I jet off to Lisbon later in the year. Is there anything better than wandering around a warm, European city in a statement maxi dress eating ice cream?
I’ve always been a mini dress kind of girl, honestly before this year I would never even take so much as a gander through the ‘maxi dress’ section. I always lived by that myth that maxi dresses are only for tall girls, that they’re unflattering for anyone under 5”7, that you’ll look like a sack of potatoes – but it’s all lies I tell you! Now I’ve found my floor length dress groove, I’m going to be championing this look right through until Autumn.
Despite the desire to slip on some sliders and grab my straw hat, this is how I’ve been making maxi’s work for the questionable spring weather we’ve been experiencing recently.
I mean this one doesn’t need much ‘working’ to make it weather suitable thanks to the long sleeves, but I couldn’t quite bare getting my toes out so safely snug in socks and trainers it is! I fell upon this little beauty in H&M sale of all places. Now you might be thinking ‘that is the ugly effing dress I have ever seen’ and I wouldn’t blame you for thinking that (I think that was my first thought too) but I love it in a ironic ‘so ugly it’s cute’ kinda way. Sash said it looks like a Halloween costume covered in bats(?!), I’m not sure where the bats are but the colour is for sure out of my comfort zone and I guess could be considered a bit ‘witchy’ (making a mental note not to pair this with my black pointed boots and fedora!)
I’ve been thinking a lot recently about my love/hate relationship with Instagram and how a 2 minute scroll can generate a £200+ ‘to buy’ list of things I convince myself I need in my life, hence making me feel eternally behind on all things fashion. I need to have some stern words with myself because in all honesty who really cares, wear what you want when you want, fashionably late and all that. Buy from Depop, pull your 5 year old favourite jeans out from their hiding place and shop the sales, if you love it wear it.
So here I am, late to the maxi dress party but happy I’ve finally jumped on the bandwagon all the same!
