I’ve been embracing an entirely new trouser style this season…
…one I never thought I’d be in to thanks to the rather awkward length and silhouette, but OH MYYY how wrong was I?! The kick flare is a look I’d been admiring from afar for a while now, but thanks to the style guru that is Megan Ellaby who brought these to my attention in her recent January Sale Haul vid, I was given the kick (ha!) I needed to try out the trend on a VERY affordable basis! All hail the Topshop sale for selling these absolute babes for £10. Yes. £10.
Fitted on the hips, slim on the legs, with a little kick out just above your ankles. The cigarette trousers quirkier friend. What’s not to love? I find them very flattering since they’re high waisted like everything else in my wardrobe; will I ever wear anything that sits on my hips again? I don’t think so. All my other trousers have been shelved for the time being whilst I experiment with styling these babies. I’m already mentally piecing together different outfit ideas centred around them, both ‘dressy’ and casual, but I think what I like most is that they’re very work appropriate. I find it super hard to be fashionable and show my true style at work – generic work clothes are so boring and there’s only so many times I can wear black culottes and a blazer.
Turns out the length is not so awkward at all since they finish nicely above your ankles allowing you to show off whatever glorious footwear you fancy wearing. And about that, I’m yet to find a pair of shoes that these trousers don’t look good with. Sock boots = YES. Mules = YES. Trainers = YES. Sandals = YES (I mean it’s obviously not sandal weather yet, but you know I’ve tried styling these for the warmer weather already!). I do however find that something with a bit of lift works best for a shorty like me.
I’m having a bit of a love affair with oxblood, especially when pairing up key pieces with similar colours and tones which is something I’ve recently discovered and am REALLY in to. Mixing up anything and everything on the pink/red/nude/burgundy spectrum. Anything that could be considered clashing. I’m in to it. These rust shades in particular are giving me all the seventies vibes!
There’s something very Alexa Chung about kick flares and those of the tailored variety in particular, and I’m always keen to share Alexa’s style!
I bought this pink/nude funnel neck top from the Topshop sale at the same time as the trousers specifically to wear together (going back to the pairing similar tones rant!). I find these super tight ribbed numbers really hard to get right but I couldn’t be happier with the fit and quality of this one, granted it is somewhat see through but I’m kind of digging that style with a lace bralet underneath. In a bid to be extra ‘fashion’ I wanted to pair this outfit with a baker boy hat, but I’m still undecided as to whether they are more ‘Instagram’ than they are ‘me’ so I haven’t taken the plunge just yet!
Let me know what you think of the kick flare trend, I can already tell they’re going to be surgically attached to my legs during the months to come and I’m very happy about it!
