…& my longest surviving item of clothing!
I love a good clear out and unlike most I can be incredibly ruthless when it comes to chucking clothes away – there’s no sentimental attachments around here!
Take just recently, I got rid of a good quarter of my wardrobe or more in one go and it felt bloody brilliant. The criteria being ‘had I worn it in the last 5 months?’ and if not, out it went . Some of it was worn only once (or not at all but I hate to admit that!), bought on a whim or ill-fitting but space taken up in my already crammed wardrobe is wasted on these items.
New Year, New Me, New Wardrobe. Right?
New isn’t always better; having this much needed January wardrobe refresh reminded me that I do have a few golden oldies that personify my style, and I wanted to share my longest surviving item with you because I still love it just as much now as I did back when I bought it. Introducing the most incredible statement black pleather dungarees you ever did see…
Forgive me if you disagree but I think this is still pretty current and since pleather, PU and vinyl appear to be having a bit of a thing right now this really wouldn’t look out of place in stores today. I stumbled upon this gem 4 years ago in the Topshop January sale; it must have been pretty undesirable to most since it was one of the few sale items which had an untouched rail full of sizes, but at I had to make it mine.
I can only assume that Topshop must have been one step ahead of the game with this since I think it was considered quite ‘out there’ for 2014, but compared to now it’s pretty tame. I did wear this to work once but never again after all the ‘oh, did you ride in on your motorbike?’ comments – on reflection, I think wearing a pleather one piece to work may have been a fashion faux pas but hey we live and we learn.
In terms of styling, I really have worn this no end of ways.
Most frequently I just throw on one of my many striped tees and a pair of trainers for Parisian vibes, or if I’m going out and wanting to look a bit more dressy I’ll swap the tee for my sheer black bodysuit and switch the trainers out for some pointed boots (or stilettos if I’m really going for it). I’ve even worn this with a big knit over the top so it looks like a pair of pleather cigarette trousers as opposed to dungarees which is a great way to achieve a 2-for-1 kind of situation. On a side note, I wish I could actually find a pair of pleather cigarette trousers which fit me as well as these do so if anyone knows of anywhere selling some hook me up, I would get so much wear out of them!
If I were an item of clothing this would be it – my most worn, most loved babe of an outfit, so for as long as this fits me and survives the wash I’ll continue to wear it.
Since this is so old and no longer available (although I have seen this pop up on Depop a few times before so keep your eyes peeled) I’ve found a few similars you might like. This ASOS number is very similar in terms of shape and fit and what’s more it’s currently on sale. Likewise so is this Topshop pair but with a more current update with the ring buckle detail and cropped, wide legs – might even have to get this pair myself!
Are dungarees your jam, or do you think they should only be seen on toddlers and small children? Let me know what’s your longest surviving wardrobe winner, I’m always in the market for more timeless classics.
